Reform UK began its political life as the Brexit Party, founded in late 2018 during a period of intense national debate over the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union. Its creation was a direct response to frustrations over the political establishment’s handling of Brexit, particularly delays and compromises in the negotiations. The party was spearheaded by prominent Eurosceptic Nigel Farage, who had previously led the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and had been instrumental in campaigning for the 2016 Brexit referendum.
Rebranding to Reform UK and Expansion of Focus (2020–2021)
Recognizing the need to remain politically viable in the post-Brexit landscape, the party underwent a strategic transformation. In late 2020, it rebranded as Reform UK, shifting its emphasis toward domestic reform and broader right-wing populist issues. Under the new name, the party positioned itself against government overreach, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. It strongly opposed lockdowns and other public health restrictions, criticizing them as economically harmful and detrimental to individual freedoms.
